Chapter 11

Romeo

After we’d disposed of the body, it was almost midnight, and there the darkness loomed over us, and we knew instinctively our relationship had changed. It was pitch black with no moon shining, but we found our way back to the cabin. Dante could retrace his steps in his sleep, he’d said when I panicked because something crossed my sneakers. I’d never run so fast the wrong way, and thanks to Dante he was able to catch up with me and this time held my trembling hand, then led me back to the right path and to the cabin.

We ambled into the cabin exhausted. Dante sat in an oversized comfortable chair after starting a fire. Feeling out of it, and confused about what next, I sat on his lap and curled up, looked up at him and he stared at me.

“What’s going on with you, Rome? You will have to get over things like this because you’re mine now and we’re together no matter what happens.” I didn’t know if I wanted this lifestyle where dead bodies showed up and where there seemed to be people trying to kill me and even my lover and his brother.

“What? I’m feeling... I don’t know what I’m feeling. This is new to me, and I know I need to be close to you.” Dante didn’t say a word, he placed his long arms around me and held me tightly, his fingers digging into my arm. I laid my head on his shoulder and we fell asleep together.

When we woke, his phone was chiming. Reaching for it on the table next to us that held a large lamp, he answered it. I’d already clambered to my feet, stood over him mumbling and waving my hands telling him not to answer it, he didn’t listen.

“Yeah, Nico. What do you want?”

“It’s time.”

“Time for what? If you expect me to kill that boy, then you’re going to be disappointed. We’re in a relationship now.” He’d hit the speaker. I waved to get his attention, but the words came tumbling out of his mouth. “I’m in love with Romeo.” Oh fuck. “There’s nothing you can say or do to make me rid myself of him. It’s over, Nico. I don’t want to live this kind of life anymore.”

“You haven’t given me a chance to speak. You’ve been rambling about me telling you to kill Romeo.” I heard everything over the speaker, especially when Nico lied. “You know I never meant for you to kill him. I said to take care of him. You must have misunderstood me. I get it, you’ve found someone you love and that is hard in our business. I get it that he’s a man. I just wondered how long it would take you to discover you are bisexual. With me I knew I was gay since I was a teen or younger. You know father had...”

“I don’t want to know about father, Nico. This is about us now. I have an opportunity to do something else and live a different life.
